There was something of a mystery report this week.

Apple and Spotify are reportedly in talks over potentially allowing Spotify users to control music playback with Siri […]

How is Music the default app - in IOS you choose the app then it plays its data so you can have spotify working as well as Music? – mmmmmm Feb 10 '13 at 9:56 I think he means when he asks Siri to play his favorite songs, or play jazz music etc, it defaults to the Music app rather than Spotify. One of the major gripes HomePod users have is that they couldn’t set Spotify or other third-party services as default. Thankfully Apple has addressed the shortcoming and HomePod now lets you change default services across different categories. Until now, HomePod users had to mention the name of the music streaming service every time you played a song. Aug 15, 2019  Spotify may be asking Apple to allow iPhone and HomePod users to set Spotify as their default music player. As things stand, SiriKit music commands.

According to The Information, Spotify and Apple are discussing a “plan” that would “let iPhone users tell Siri to play songs, playlists, and albums with voice commands.” These conversations reportedly stem from new APIs in iOS 13 that make it possible for developers of audio apps to integrate with Siri.

As we noted, it’s unclear why that would require talks, as the SiriKit APIs will allow Spotify or anyone else to take advantage of Siri for music requests. However, there is one rather more radical possibility…

Spotify may be asking Apple to allow iPhone and HomePod users to set Spotify as their default music player.

As things stand, SiriKit music commands would need to be prefixed or suffixed by an instruction to use the Spotify app. This would be something like:

Hey Siri, ask Spotify to play Camille.

Hey Siri, play A Fine Frenzy on Spotify.

With short versions likely also possible, along the lines of:

Hey Siri, Spotify Ingrid Michaelson.

Omit the Spotify part, and the device will default to Apple Music.

Which is fine if, like me, your preferred music service is Apple Music, with Spotify as a secondary option. In my case, I use Spotify for tango music and Apple Music for everything else. That’s partly because Spotify has a better selection of tango music, and partly because I don’t want tango to screw up my Apple Music recommendations.

App

But if Spotify is your preferred or only music service, you’re forced to use somewhat clunky language. It would be much more convenient for Spotify users if they could simply select Spotify as their default music player. Having done that once, they could then use much simpler commands:

Hey Siri, play Janis Ian.

Hey Siri, play my music.

Hey Siri, play Discover Weekly.

That would benefit many of Apple’s customers, but what about Apple itself? It might seem that Apple would be shooting itself in the foot to help a competing streaming service in this way.

I’d argue the opposite, however. I think Apple would be doing itself a favor on three counts, with almost no downside.

First, those customers who prefer Spotify will be very happy with the change. Making customers happy is kind of customer service 101.

Second, extending this to HomePod would create a whole new customer base. At present, HomePod only really makes sense if you are an Apple Music subscriber. Sure, you can AirPlay from the Spotify app (though there are glitches with stereo pairs — a story for another day…), but then you’re giving up all the smart speaker benefits. Half the point of HomePod is you can just tell it what music to play.

Third, this kind of gesture would help Apple with its various antitrust battles at present, including the one prompted by a Spotify complaint. The Cupertino company would be able to point to it as an example of providing competitors with a level playing field on its platform.

And there’s really no downside. This is not a change customers are going to make randomly. The only people who are going to go to the trouble of digging into the settings to change their default music player are those who are already loyal users of a competing service, be it Spotify, Tidal or whatever. Those people are not really potential Apple Music customers anyway.

So in my view, this would be a win-win: good for Apple, good for its customers. And if Apple doesn’t do it, iOS 13 may include a workaround anyway.

I keep meaning to verify this works but I believe if you were to delete the Music app, Siri’s logic would then de facto fall back to Spotify (assuming Spotify was installed and had implemented the new API) without having to explicitly say it. https://t.co/XuMDh5HWjW

So given people will already have the option, why not claim the credit by making it official?

Amazon Echo speakers let you stream music from various services and devices. Typically, you issue the command 'Alexa, play music' followed by the name of the streaming partner. If you use a service regularly, such as Spotify, you can avoid adding the streaming partner name to your command by making it the default provider. That's what we will tell you in this post. Let's see how to add Spotify as default music service on Amazon Echo.

Earlier, users from select regions enjoyed listening to Spotify on Amazon Echo as the service was limited to the Spotify Premium subscribers. In some countries, the Spotify service on Echo was unavailable for premium and free subscribers. Fortunately, that changed recently when Spotify made streaming possible for several countries for Spotify Free users in U.K., Ireland, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Mexico, and India.

How to Link Spotify and Choose It as Default For Music in Amazon Echo

You will need the Alexa app for this procedure. The overall idea is broken into two methods — link Spotify with Amazon and make it a default provider. Let’s check the steps.

Link Spotify to Amazon Echo

Before making Spotify the default music provider, it’s important to link the Spotify account to your Amazon Echo device. Here are the steps for the same.

Step 1: Launch the Alexa app on your smartphone. Log in to the Amazon account registered with your Echo device, in case you haven't set it up yet. You should check our guide on how to set up the Echo like a pro.

Step 2: Tap on the three-bar icon at the top. From the menu, select Settings.

Step 3: Scroll down and tap on Music.

Step 4: Tap on Link New Service. Choose Spotify on the next screen.

Note: In case you don’t see Spotify, it might not be supported by Amazon Echo in your country. Alternatively, it might be still rolling out in your region. So try after a few hours or a day.

Step 5: You will be taken to the Spotify skill page. Tap on Enable to use.

Make Spotify as Default for Music in Amazon Echo

After linking Spotify in the Alexa app, you can easily make it the default service. In case you don’t do so, you will need to use Spotify at the end of all your voice commands. For instance, ‘Alexa, play XYZ playlist on Spotify.’ If Spotify isn’t the default provider, Amazon will fetch music from its music service or another default service. Sometimes, Echo will not play any music, check various ways to fix the problem.

Here are the steps to make Spotify the default music service.

Step 1: Open the Alexa app and go to Settings from the three-bar icon.

How to Control Spotify on Amazon Echo

When Alexa and Spotify are linked successfully, and you start playing something, you can control that in several ways. Firstly, you can use the Alexa app or through the web on alexa.amazon.com. You can also use the Spotify app or its web version at open.spotify.com.

Lastly, you can use the following Spotify commands on your Echo device:

  • Alexa, Play Spotify
  • Alexa, Play (name of the playlist)
  • Alexa, Like this song
  • Alexa, What’s playing
  • Alexa, Play my Discover weekly
  • Alexa, Shuffle (playlist name) playlist

If playlists do not work as intended, say ‘Alexa, play (playlist name) playlist.’ And if Alexa plays a random playlist instead of the one created by you, add word my to your command, i.e., ‘Alexa, play my Best songs playlist.’

Tip: Avoid using punctuations, acronyms, or difficult titles as your Spotify playlist names.

Competition Is Strong

We are glad that Spotify is finally available for Free users in many countries on the Echo. It was high time that Spotify introduced the feature as the competition is growing day by day.
